I want to show you is Palms 22. It was written around 1011 -971 BC by King David. Some people have tried to say this is a self-reflection of David that makes know sense to me. It is clearly about Jesus not David even if David was hurt in battle there is no indication that he had his hands and feet pierced like Jesus. I have heard many preachers talk about Jesus saying the first line on the cross and that showing a separation of Jesus from God the father. I do not believe that at all. I believe that if Jesus could have a conversation with the theft on the cross. That Jesus was coherent enough that he could have quoted this whole passage of scripture in the 3 and a half hours that he was on the cross before he died. Basically, saying look at this scripture that is the way I feel. This passage lets you in Jesus’ head when he was on the cross. Let’s take a look.
1 My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
Why are you so far from saving me, from the words of my groaning?
2 O my God, I cry by day, but you do not answer,
and by night, but I find no rest.
Verse 1 and 2 shows us the weight of wrath poured out on Jesus. Jesus had asked if there was any other way but him to drink this cup of sin for payment for all that believe and trust in Him.
3 Yet you are holy,
enthroned on the praises of Israel.
4 In you our fathers trusted;
they trusted, and you delivered them.
5 To you they cried and were rescued;
in you they trusted and were not put to shame.
3,4 and 5 This is when Jesus focuses on the holiness of God and the loving relationship of the Jewish people over the centuries of trust. How he was rescued then when they cried to God in prayer.
6 But I am a worm and not a man,
scorned by mankind and despised by the people.
6 verse Jesus is saying that he feels like a blood worn because he is drenched in his own blood and no longer like a man.
7 All who see me mock me; they make mouths at me; they wag their heads;
Verse 7 He is stating all the people that he sees around him that are mocking him on the cross.
8 “He trusts in the LORD; let him deliver him;
let him rescue him, for he delights in him!”
Verse 8 Jesus trusts in the LORD; let the Father deliver Jesus; let Father rescue Jesus, for He delights in Jesus!
9 Yet you are he who took me from the womb;
you made me trust you at my mother’s breasts.
10 On you was I cast from my birth,
and from my mother’s womb you have been my God.
Verse 9 and 10 Jesus has been saying that he loved the Father God from the time he was nursing on his mother’s breast. Because he was made this way from his mother’s womb to be a worshipper of God.
11 Be not far from me,
for trouble is near,
and there is none to help.
12 Many bulls encompass me;
strong bulls of Bashan surround me;
13 they open wide their mouths at me,
like a ravening and roaring lion.
Verses 11,12, and 13 Is Jesus pleading with God the Father to not be far from Him because there are strong adversaries against Him. The word Bashan means is very feral ground that makes things stronger.
14 I am poured out like water,
and all my bones are out of joint;
my heart is like wax;
it is melted within my breast;
15 my strength is dried up like a potsherd,
and my tongue sticks to my jaws;
you lay me in the dust of death.
Verses 14 and 15 Describes How Jesus felt when He was close to death. He felt like every bone was out of joint and His heart was melting like wax and His sole was totally spent and poured out like water.
16 For dogs encompass me;
a company of evildoers encircles me;
they have pierced my hands and feet—
17 I can count all my bones—
they stare and gloat over me;
Verses 16 and 17 the evildoers surround Jesus and think they got the better of him by having him crucified
18 they divide my garments among them,
and for my clothing they cast lots.
Verse 18 they gambled for Jesus garments this is confirmed in the new testament and something Jesus had no control over but it became fact.
19 But you, O LORD, do not be far off!
O you my help, come quickly to my aid!
20 Deliver my soul from the sword,
my precious life from the power of the dog!
21 Save me from the mouth of the lion!
Verses 19,20 and 21 Jesus prayed asking the Father not to be far off and to come to his aid. Asking God to take is precious life from the evil people acting like animals around Him.
You have rescued me from the horns of the wild oxen!
22 I will tell of your name to my brothers;
in the midst of the congregation I will praise you:
23 You who fear the LORD, praise him!
All you offspring of Jacob, glorify him,
and stand in awe of him, all you offspring of Israel!
Verses 22 and 23 These are the verses that make me think that Jesus said the whole Psalm on the cross. These verses are a plea to all the Jews around the cross that fear God. The bible says and the fear of God is the beginning of wisdom. Jesus is preaching to the congregation to his last breath. Praise God, glorify God and stand if awe of Him you offspring of Israel in the line of Abraham Isaac and Jacob.
24 For he has not despised or abhorred
the affliction of the afflicted,
and he has not hidden his face from him,
but has heard, when he cried to him.
Verse 24 God the father has not despised or found Jesus on the cross abhorred or the affliction of the afflicted of Jesus Christ God the Father has not hidden his face from Jesus but has heard on our behalf and Jesus behalf. When Jesus cried to the Father God in prayer.
25 From you comes my praise in the great congregation;
my vows I will perform before those who fear him.
Verse 25 From the Father comes the praise of Jesus in the great church congregation and Jesus’s vows I will perform for the people that fear the Father. Jesus’ righteousness will protect us from the Father’s wrath because it was poured out on the cross.
26 The afflicted shall eat and be satisfied;
those who seek him shall praise the LORD!
May your hearts live forever!
27 All the ends of the earth shall remember
and turn to the LORD,
and all the families of the nations
shall worship before you.
28 For kingship belongs to the LORD,
and he rules over the nations.
Verses 26,27 and 28 The people afflicted with sin shall eat and be satisfied but those that seek Jesus shall Praise the LORD! Their hearts will live forever! And all the ends of the earth will remember Jesus and turn towards the LORD! All the families of the nations shall worship before Jesus His kingship belongs to the LORD! Jesus kingship rules over all the nations.
29 All the prosperous of the earth eat and worship;
before him shall bow all who go down to the dust,
even the one who could not keep himself alive.
Verse 29 All the rich and prosperous of earthly things will eat and worship before Jesus and will bow down all that are going to die. No one can cheat death and keep themselves alive.
30 Posterity shall serve him;
it shall be told of the Lord to the coming generation;
Verse 30 generations to come shall serve Jesus it shall be told to the Father God to the coming generations.
31 they shall come and proclaim his righteousness to a people yet unborn,
that he has done it.
Verse 31 They shall proclaim Jesus righteousness to their children. That Jesus has completed His work perfectly on the cross. Jesus has done it!!
